No Trouble At Mill

As the legend goes, the newly crowned King Malcolm of Scotland was on the run from the infamous and power hungry Macbeth - who was out to kill him just as he had slain Malcolm’s father Duncan. Malcolm was helped by a local farmer, Cunninghame, on the outskirts of Stewarton and was hidden amongst the hay in a barn near The Mill House. Thanks to the quick-wittedness of the farmer, King Malcolm escaped with his life and later rewarded the farmer with the title of 'Baillie of Cunninghame' to show his gratitude.

Fascinated by this story, Colin enlisted the services of talented local artist, Graham McKean, who was only too keen to bring the event to life in an original oil painting. Graham explains: ‘As an Ayrshire artist it was a great pleasure for me to produce this historic painting and a real honour to attempt to portray this important but little-known part of the colourful history of Scotland.’

After having researched the history and completed his preliminary sketches, Graham worked solidly on the painting for the best part of a month before sharing it with Colin and the team at the Mill House, where it now has pride of place. Be sure to look out for it when you next visit!
